Indiana Department of Natural Resources 402 W. Washington St. W255 B Indianapolis, IN 46204-2748 Hoosier Riverwatch is offering equipment grants for volunteer water quality monitoring. This year will find more Hoosiers down by the riverside checking out the health of their local river or stream. That’s because the DNR is again using federal funds to support the Hoosier Riverwatch program in Indiana. Hoosier Riverwatch is sponsored by Purdue University and the DNR. It is a statewide education program that focuses on local river and stream stewardship. The grants are funded by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and will help as many as 50 groups throughout the state establish education and river stewardship programs.
“Hoosier rivers and streams are cleaner today than they have been in years,” said John Goss, DNR director. “A contributing factor in the improvement is Hoosier Riverwatch.‑ These local volunteers provide crucial information about the health of Indiana’s rivers and streams and these grants will help start more local monitoring programs and keep the improvements going.” Nonprofit organizations, public agencies, environmental groups, and schools are among those eligible for grants. Since 1996, approximately 400 volunteer groups have received equipment and have started monitoring local waterways. The grants provide a package of equipment that includes chemical testing kits, nets for collecting aquatic life, and manuals for water quality monitoring. Grant recipients are required to attend a training workshop for water quality monitoring. Hoosier Riverwatch provides free training workshops throughout the state. To request a grant application, contact Marie Collins at the DNR Natural Resources Education Center at nrec@dnr.state.in.us or by phone at 317-562-1338.‑ Applications and a schedule of training workshops held statewide are also available on the DNR Web site at www.state.in.us/dnr/soilcons/riverwatch.‑ Completed applications must be submitted to Hoosier Riverwatch by March 15, 2003.
MUZZLELOADING 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS PROGRAM
This program is sponsored by the Allen County 4-H Shooting Sports Club. The program teaches safe handling of firearms, proper use of equipment, shooting techniques and ethics of good shooters. The program will begin Thursday, April 24 at 6:30pm at the Allen County Extension Office, 4001 Crescent Avenue. Then the program will continue in Spencerville Indiana on May 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Registration is limited. Advanced registration is required. The program is open to all youth grades 3-12. The cost is $20; equipment will be provided. Please call the Allen County Extension Office at 481-6826 to request additional information. Instructors are certified through the Indiana 4-H Shooting Sports Program of Purdue University and the Department of Natural Resources.
ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION CLUB for high school age students, hosted by Fox Island, will meet at the Nature Center from 3:30pm to 5pm on the third Wednesday of every month starting February 19, 2003. R.S.V.P. at 449-3180.
FOX ISLAND ALLIANCE VOLUNTEER TRAIL GUIDE TRAINING WORKSHOPS
The Allen County Parks Department and the Fox Island Alliance are cosponsoring a series of workshops to prepare volunteer trail guides for spring hikes with school children.
March 15, 2003-9am to 4pm – at the Fox Island Nature Center, 7324 Yohne Road. The topics for the day will be “Birding for Trail Guides” and “Stinging Insects”. Drinks provided; please bring a sack lunch.
April 26, 2003-9am to 12noon – at Metea County Park. We will hike and learn about spring flowers.
May 17, 2003-9am to 12noon – at the Fox Island Nature Center. The topic of this morning is Fox Island and Allen County Geology. Part of the morning will be spent at a stone quarry near Fox Island.
