SCOUTING AROUND

BSA – 1910 – 2010

On the occasion of the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, we can be proud of our Scouting heritage here in northeastern Indiana.

In 1917, we were chartered to provide the Boy Scout program to the youth of northeast Indiana.  Since then, we have gone through many evolutions of Scout camps, council leadership and council boundaries.  Scouting programs like Lion Cubs, high adventure Exploring and Den Mothers have come and gone, but one thing has remained the same.

The Boy Scouts of America has maintained our mission as professed by the Boy Scout Oath and Law.  We continue to teach these values to new youth with the same emphasis on duty to God, country, and self.  And within the words of the Oath and Law come the profound characteristics of leadership, self-esteem, respect and service to others.

Tens of thousands of boys and girls have benefited from the programs of the Boy Scouts of America within our Council over the years.  We serve over 8,000 youth alone with a Scouting program in 2009.  We continue to build and grow our Scouting programs to reach more youth, every year, throughout the 11 counties of the Anthony Wayne Area Council, form Redkey to Howe and Fremont to Mentone.

I would be remiss if we didn’t mention the thousands of volunteers that have led our Packs, Troops, all Scouting units, plus the committees and Board leadership over the years.  In 2009, 2,800 volunteers were responsible for the quality programs.  Within them, the Anthony Wayne Area Council could not continue to have a positive impact on our youth.  They are essential to the quality and delivery of our programs and work hand-in-hand with our small staff.

As we celebrate our past during the 100th Anniversary, we look forward to a future of growth and an ever growing need for youth to find “ . . . values, leadership, teamwork, and community service,” within an organization like the Boy Scouts of America.  I hope you will join us in this celebration, but also as we build the future through the youth in our communities and a Scouting program.

Yours in Scouting,

John C. Fenoglio – AWAC Scout Executive/CEO

NOTE: The Boy Scouts of America has programs designed for boys completing kindergarten through 20 years of age as well as for young women completing 8th grade through 20 years old.

If you know a youth who could benefit from the values of Scouting, call the Anthony Wayne Area Council Office at 260-432-9593 to register or to seek more information.
