ST. JOSEPH RIVER WATERSHED INITIATIVE TO CELEBRAT 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF CONFERENCE ON THE ST. JOSEPH

The public is invited to join the St. Joseph River Watershed Initiative Board of Directors for a celebration of ten years of watershed protection on Tuesday, July 25 at the Metea County Park Nature Center.

The park is located at 8401 Union Chapel Road, Leo-Cedarville. The event begins at 3:00 p.m.

According to board chairman Bob Gillespie, field activities along the adjacent Cedar Creek will begin at 3:00 p.m. and will include a water quality sampling demonstration, in-stream fish counting and assessment demonstration and benthic macro-invertebrate and habitat evaluation. A picnic supper catered by Dutch Heritage and an evening program are scheduled to begin at approximately 5:00 p.m. at the Nature Center.

Dr. Jane Frankenberger, Water Quality Coordinator for the Purdue Extension Program in Soil and Water Engineering and Water Management, is the keynote speaker for the event; Frankenberger will examine clean water and healthy watersheds as a part of a secure future in Indiana and the United States.

Larry Clemens of The Nature Conservancy and Jim Lake of the Indiana Department of Agriculture, both founding members of the Initiative, will present a review of the Initiative’s first ten years.

The St. Joseph River watershed includes Williams County, Ohio, and Hillsdale County, Michigan, along with Allen, DeKalb, Noble and Steuben counties in Indiana. The Initiative’s focus is on the water quality of the St. Joseph River, which is the source of drinking water for nearly 250,000 people in Fort Wayne and New Haven.

Reservations for the event are required. Call the St. Joseph River Watershed Initiative at 260-484-5848 ext. 3 or e-mail Tina Puitz at tina-puitz@sjrwi.org. Deadline for reservations is July 18. There is no charge for this event; however, donations to help cover the cost of meals will be gratefully accepted.
