VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CLEANUP DAY AT LITTLE LEAGUE FIELD
Elmhurst Neighborhood Association Clean-Up Day is scheduled for Saturday, May 15 at the YMCA Hodell Acres Summer Camp at 3433 Elmhurst Drive. This is a joint effort planned for the annual Fort Wayne Great American Clean-Up Day of the neighborhood, the city, the YMCA, and the Elmhurst Little League parents.
Cleaning up the bushes and brush around the Little League Practice Field at Hodell Acres on Elmhurst Drive is a huge project that needs to be done every few years so the kids can retrieve there baseballs that sometimes go into the woods on the Southside of the ball field. The city of Fort Wayne will provide gloves, T-shirts, and garbage bags for the cleanup.
Hodell Acres is a great neighborhood park that is a fun spot for our children, with a great playground, ball field, pavilion, camp lodge, lake and woods with a lot of natural wildlife, and even deer living in their natural environment.
Over the years many different Fort Wayne organizations and businesses have donated and supported Hodell Acres to make this one of the nicest free places to enjoy in our Waynedale area. It is really like a “Little Bit of Country in the City” which our Elmhurst Neighborhood Association has supported and helped with clean-up projects since 1986. The Elmhurst Neighborhood Association got a Foellinger Foundation Bicentennial grant to start the building of the playground in 1993, and other businesses and groups have just recently made great additions to the Hodell Acres playground. The Elmhurst Neighborhood Association worked with I & M to get lighting in the pavilion and in the playground area, with plans in the future to put lighting and new dugouts around the baseball field.
