Waynedale Political Commentaries

DEAR WAYNEDALE READERS

The winter snow season is upon us. The City of Fort Wayne is committed to proactive snow removal in order to provide excellent customer service to you. The City Street Department uses a satellite weather forecasting system to track approaching snowstorms. This allows the department and its drivers to prepare for severe weather in advance.

There are 18 snow routes to plow and salt. Priority one streets (arterial) are plowed and salted first. Once priority one streets are completed, crews move to priority two streets (collectors and Citilink bus routes). If there is an accumulation of three or more inches of snow, crews will then move to priority three streets (residential). The Street Department has over 70 trucks in its fleet for snow removal. A detailed snow route map with street names can be found on the City’s website, www.cityoffortwayne.org. The website also features the City’s Snow Policies and Procedures Manual.

We are gearing up for the Southwest Extended Annexation. More than 25,000 residents will be annexed into the City on January 1, 2006. A majority of the residents are from Aboite Township. A small number of residents are from western Wayne Township. The annexation area covers 12.85 square miles.

Two fire stations have been built. Fire Station #18 is at the southeast corner of Liberty Mills and Homestead Roads. Fire Station #19 is at the northeast corner of Scott and Covington Roads. Forty new firefighters will serve the two new fire stations. The recently completed Fire Station #17 on Getz Road will also serve the annexation area. Twenty new police officers will be added to the southwest division.

Trails will be constructed in front of both new fire stations. This work complements the efforts of Aboite New Trails, Inc., a non-profit organization that promotes the expansion of multi-use trails. Aboite New Trails plans to construct a 50-mile trail system.

Have a wonderful holiday season.

Mayor
