LT. COL. U.S. AIR FORCE EUGENE D. ROYER, 85
LT. COL. U.S. AIR FORCE EUGENE D. ROYER, 85, of Fort Wayne, died Tuesday, January 18, 2005, at Ossian Health & Rehabilitation Center. Born January 7, 1920, he was a retired bricklayer for local 40, working for more than 40 years. He also served as a fighter pilot with the 9th Air Force, in Europe, during World War II. After his discharge, in 1946, he joined the Indiana Air National Guard, 163rd Fighter Squadron at Baer Field, Fort Wayne, in 1950. He was called to active duty, from 1951 to 1953, during the Korean Conflict, attached to the Air Defense Command. He was again called to active duty, in 1961, during the Berlin crisis, serving ten months in France as commander of the 163rd Fighter Squadron. He then retired from the Indiana Air National Guard in 1965. He was a member of American Legion Post 241, V.F.W. 1421 and AMVETS 33.
Surviving are sons, Fred E. Royer of Decatur and Walter J. (Barbara J.) Royer of Ossian; daughter, Nancy J. Royer of Galion, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty B. Royer, in 1990.
Service was Saturday, January 22, at Elzey Patterson Rodak Home for Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Road. Burial in Prairie Grove Cemetery, Fort Wayne.
