Little River Wetlands Project, a local nature organization protecting almost 1,200 acres of natural and restored wetlands in Allen and Huntington Counties, offers interesting and informative nature events this September. All are free and open to the community.

Meet at the Eagle Marsh barn, 6801 Engle Road, Fort Wayne to hike and explore the preserve’s interesting plants and wildlife.

Saturday, September 7
11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Butterflies Rule at the Monarch Festival
Meet at the Eagle Marsh barn, 6801 Engle Road, for this family-friendly event featuring hikes, demonstrations, education stations with activities showcasing monarchs’ lifecycle and migration, and monarch crafts for kids. You can also plant a milkweed to help feed monarch caterpillars at Eagle Marsh or take one home for your butterfly garden.

Let’s Hear It for Salamanders
Light breakfast and nature presentation for nature lovers 50+ at Coventry Meadows Senior Community on W. Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne. Based on his research at Eagle Marsh and Fox Island County Park, IPFW graduate student Ryan Hunt will reveal interesting and little-known facts about salamanders of the area.

Short Hikes for Short Legs: Scat
Meet at the Eagle Marsh barn, 6801 Engle Road, Fort Wayne. Children ages 3 to 5 and a responsible adult, learn all about animal scat (poop)! We’ll use play-dough to make models of scat, followed by a short hike looking for these unique “signs” of different wildlife.
