DOG FUR IS JUST PART OF THE DECOR – Community Spotlight

A staple in the Waynedale community since Barrett’s Dime Store leased the space to them many years ago, Waynedale Grooming Salon offers full service grooming services and natural pet foods. Having spent 38 years in the business, owner and head groomer Lynn Swager has a true passion for animals.

Lynn worked at Waynedale Grooming for three years before purchasing the business from Nadine Meyers in 1989. Interacting with the animals is Lynn’s favorite part of the job. She says, “I enjoy the different personalities of each pet I groom and I feel good about my contributions to keeping them happy and healthy.”

A resident of the South Wayne neighborhood for over 50 years, Lynn is number six in a family of seven children. She attended South Wayne Elementary School, Fairfield Jr. High and Southside High School. Following her graduation, she attended IPFW for two years then moved to Boston where she graduated from Newberry Junior College with an Associate Degree in Canine Science.

Lynn is a member of the Fort Wayne Obedience Club where she has served on the board for eight years. She has trained the general public in obedience classes and assists with the Annual Obedience Trial where dogs earn titles. She is also a lifetime member of the International Society of Canine Cosmetology.

Waynedale Grooming Salon is supportive of all Waynedale’s major community events such as the annual Picnic in the Park, Kingston’s Taste of Waynedale plus they sponsor a trunk at the annual Trunk or Treat supporting the Trails and Sidewalks Initiative.

When not working, Lynn trains and shows her two dogs, two Doberman Pinschers; “T” who is four years old and eight month old Storm. She participates in 10 -12 competitions each year showing her dogs. “T” has finished as a UKC Champion and taken UKC and AKC Obedience titles and has also qualified as a companion dog. Young Storm will start showing next month. Lynn also enjoys gardening and her water garden.

Looking ahead, Lynn’s goals for Waynedale Grooming Salon are to continue her education about more holistic ways to care for pets including the use of vitamins and herbs and to learn about nutrition to promote better pet health.
