DONALD DUANE SHEETS, 83
DONALD DUANE SHEETS (1930-2013) was born November 17, 1930 in Werner, North Dakota to Ocie Mildred Hallock Sheets and Arthur Kenneth Sheets, and died Friday the 13th of December, 2013. The Sheets family moved to their home off of Illinois Road in Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1941. Donald attended Anthony Wayne Elementary School (where Canterbury Elementary School is now located), and graduated from Elmhurst High School in 1948.
Donald’s first job was as a newspaper delivery boy delivering newspapers on bicycle to homes on Ardmore Ave, North Washington Road and Illinois Road between Jefferson Blvd. and Getz Road. Donald attended the Fort Wayne Gospel Temple located on Rudisill Blvd. He played in the band that played music for the Fort Wayne Gospel Temple music hour program on WOWO radio. Donald graduated from watch and jewelry school in Chicago, Illinois, and worked for Bowmar Instrument Company as an inspector.
Donald married Mary Belle Crites in 1951. They were married at the residence of Reverend Forrest Weddle, Donald’s Uncle, who was a Professor of Bible History at the Fort Wayne Bible College. Donald and Mary were members of Avalon Missionary Church. Donald served in the Navy Reserves.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Sheets, daughters, Benita (Marvin) Steyer, Barbara (Brian) Harris; grandchildren, Bryan Gripp, Jennifer and Benjamin Steyer, Damon (Stephanie) and Derek Horner, Jeff and Mark Harris; four great-grandchildren; brother Lester (Doris) Sheets; and sister, Mildred (Louis) Mabee.
An honorary Miltary service was held December 16, 2013 at Covington Memorial Funeral Home, 8408 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, IN.
