GIRL SCOUTS’ NUT SELLING EXPERIENCE IS PRICELESS
The Girl Scouts annual nuts sales will start on October 13th. It is not easy for the girls to ask people if they want to buy nuts, or cookies, but they learn a great deal in the process. As they come around this year, take some time to get to know them. They are eager to get to know you. The following is the experience of one of the brownies last year:
On Saturday, October 21, 2006 Ethel started out around her neighborhood with her dad to sell nuts and magazine subscriptions. What started out as an opportunity to sell, turned into an adventure to meet the neighbors.
The neighbors were very gracious and Ethel was having fun talking to them as she worked on her sales presentation.
When she got Mrs. Elena Sprullers house, she was greeted warmly. As Elena completed the order form, Ethel had an opportunity get to know her better. They both shared the love for nature and watching the animals in the neighborhood. Elena talked about her hobbies and showed Ethel many of the things she had done.
The adventure continued as Ethel met a school teacher and one neighbor who didn’t want nuts, but was willing to make a donation. This was a welcome surprise. Ethel turned the corner and knocked on the door of Ms. Ann Rickert. Ann was dressed as Annie Oakley accompanied by a friend dressed as Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat. They were both getting ready to attend a wedding where the guests were to come in costume. After letting them know that the nuts would be delivered before Thanksgiving and laughing about their costumes, Ethel continued around the block.
The time spent selling nuts was profitable, but the experience of spending time meeting the neighbors was priceless.
