COUNCILMAN’S CORNER
Greetings!! Finally, some nice weather! This is a great time to take the whole family to one of our city parks for a picnic. Through the efforts of many individuals including members of the Southeast Waynedale Neighborhood Association under the leadership of Ms. Beulah Stoker, Waynedale Park has received several upgrades during the last couple of years. At least 15 other parks throughout Fort Wayne have new playground equipment. Parks are a great low-cost way to have a family experience!!
I always support any activity which strengthens organized neighborhood associations. I was happy to hear that members of the Old Trail Neighborhood Association are in the process of re-energizing their association. Be sure to let me know if you and your neighbors are interested in improving your neighborhood association or starting a new one in your area if you don’t already have one. The best way to get things done in your neighborhood—such as new streets, sidewalks, flood prevention, etc.—is to have an active association working with the city and yours truly.
You may or may not have heard of Indiana’s new public law 1362. This new state statute makes it possible for 2 units of government to combine to save tax dollars and deliver services more efficiently. For example, city and county governments could combine or 2 townships could join. The new law lays down specific rules under which mergers of this type can legally occur together. Since we’re living in the 21st century with a state constitution written in the 19th century it’s time to at least consider alternatives and the Governor and legislature recognized that fact. It’s possible that a new form of local government may emerge from discussions which are just beginning. Whatever happens, it’s important that everyone in our city and county is treated fairly including those living in small towns, minorities, residents of older and newer neighborhoods, etc.
Let me know your thoughts about local government restructuring or any other ideas you may have as to how local government can work more effectively!
