SCOUTING SMOKE SIGNALS

Over one hundred Boy Scouts and Scouters gathered over the weekend of April 29 to May 1 at Camp Timberlake for the annual Miami District Spring Camporee. Camp Timberlake is a newer campground on the West side of Roanoke. The Campground is open to the public and features full accommodations for RV camping and plenty of sites for “primitive” camping. There are three lakes on the 65-acre property and both boat rentals and shore fishing are affordable. There is a frisbee (disc) golf course available and bicycle rentals are also an option along with hay rides.

This was the Boy Scouts first look at the year and a half old campground but it won’t be our last. We would have to give Camp Timberlake 5 out of 5 tent stakes on our critics scale. It is user friendly, close, and offers 1/2 day, day, week, weekend, and seasonal opportunities. Catch some fresh air and fish while you explore the rest of the facilities.

The Boy Scout theme this spring involved Scoutmaster furniture and duct tape adventures. There were many interesting projects in the Scoutmaster furniture project, although it did seem like many units chose to lash together a comfortable chair for their overworked Scoutmasters. The duct tape competition was limited only by imagination and some ingenious projects were entered.

The Scouts weathered Friday’s drizzle without many casualties, but Saturdays wind almost relocated several of the tents into the lake. After making certain that all equipment was condition one secure, the wind helped by drying the wet equipment out thoroughly.

The Scouts enjoyed free time by fishing, working on advancements, and playing cards and chess in the pavilions. It was a terrific weekend to get out camping and really enjoy one of our first nice spring weekends.

Scouter Bob Heniser led an outdoor worship Sunday morning and then the group broke camp so they could return to the real world. But it won’t be long before we are headed out camping again.

You are welcome to join us in the fun!
