2002 YOUTH GARDEN PROGRAM
Space is limited for the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Services’ fifth annual Allen County Master Gardener Youth Volunteer Program for children ages 8-12. Apply now at the Purdue Cooperative Extension Office. Space is limited. The children will participate in a gardening curriculum, hands-on learning, and educational field trips. The students receive a handbook with gardening information and learn from instructors about: garden safety, biennials, perennials, turf and lawnmower safety, insects, plant diseases, herbs, wildlife, trees, biotech, water gardening, cooking from your garden, weather and gardening, fairy gardens, and indoor plants. Registration is $30, which covers curriculum materials, plant materials, supplies, and a T-shirt. A limited number of scholarships are available.
BIOLOGICAL CONTROL WORKSHOP
The BCW will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2002 from 1pm to 4pm at the Allen County Extension Office. During the workshop, participants will learn new ways to approach insect pest control in their home garden and landscapes – ways that do not involve the use of chemical pesticides. Purdue University entomologists will discuss the identification of insect pests of the home garden. The specialists will also discuss the identification and use of beneficial insects and alternatives to pesticide use. The seminar is limited to the first 50 applicants. The cost of the workshop is $20, which includes a workshop notebook, and a text on biological control. For more information call the extension office at 481-6826.
