MAURICE (MAURY) J. WYSS, 83

MAURICE (MAURY) J. WYSS, 83, passed away April 30th at the Cedars Retirement Home in Leo, IN. Born at home and raised on a dairy farm near Monroeville, IN, he was the 6th of 13 children by Albert and Monica (Harkenrider) Wyss. He learned his 3 R’s, reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmetic, at St. Rose Catholic Elementary School in Monroeville and attended Monroeville High School. At age 19 he enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served his country for 3 years. Upon successful completion of his military assignment in 1957, he began employment with General Telephone Company of Fort Wayne, IN. As a lineman, he worked on numerous difficult projects, some in adverse weather conditions and unscheduled hours, and was one of the first employees appointed to the company’s initial purchase of a bucket lift truck.

In 1968 he exchanged marriage vows with Lucile Higbee at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Church where they were founding members and served on parish ministries together. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 330 of New Haven, IN and the Knights of Columbus.

As a military veteran, he volunteered 4,332 hours at the Fort Wayne VA Center and for his efforts was awarded the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award from the VA Volunteer Services in 2016.

Due to failing health, they entered the Cedars Care Facility and sold their home of nearly 50 years where they had enjoyed the company of, and in later years the support of, their neighbors.

An avid reader, Maury was intelligent, passionate and generous to the causes he believed in. Of his noteworthy memory of past events he would explain “It’s a gift from God”. His renowned “Be reasonable; do it my way” illustrated both his humor and his control of a given discussion. He enjoyed Polka music and dancing, the Fort Wayne German Fest (with beverage in hand), traveling with wife Lucile, gardening, time with family, friends and neighbors, any and all discussion of “Minny Mo’s” and the quarterly publication “The Prairie Gold Rush” that featured the beloved Minneapolis-Moline farm tractors, his favorite model being the M-670.

By contributing time, talent and resources to country, church, community and company, his fortune was in faith, family and friends. He passed with a “clean slate” and will be missed by all who knew him. By his efforts, ours is a better place; may he rest in peace in his new, better place.

He is survived by step-daughter Sue Ann Rupp (Josh Ingojo) of San Francisco, California; brothers Clifford (Monica) of Coldwater, Michigan, Marion Jean (Karla) and Gerard (Karen) both of Fort Wayne; brother-in-law Tom (Bobbi) Jackson of Indianapolis; sisters Therese (Carl) Sorg of Monroeville, Evelyn Beam and Mary Lourine Brososky both of Fort Wayne, Mary Lurana Travis of Springdale, Arkansas; sister-in-law Linda Wyss of Fort Wayne and 41 nephews and nieces and many great nephews and nieces.

TOM KNOX, 82

TOM KNOX recently passed away. He was 82 and died after a long illness. He used to referee in the old ABA Pro basketball league back in the 1970s. “I haven’t seen him for 10 years or so, but I really liked Tom. He was a quiet guy and couldn’t have been nicer,” reported Tom O’Brien.

“My first encounter came in our men’s Main Auto 1970s softball league in Fort Wayne. I was playing 2nd base, when the other team got a big hit with runners on. When the batter got to 3rd base standing up, he noticed that our catcher wasn’t at home plate. Nobody was! I saw the same thing from the infield, so I streaked towards home to cover it. Our pitcher Loren Hanks caught the relay at pitchers mound. He heard me yell and saw me streaking towards home plate. Hanks threw me the ball just as the runner was coming home. I swiped him with the tag, and the umpire (Tom Knox) yelled “SAFE!”. To this day, I don’t know if my tag got him in time or not. But I kinda went ballistic because I wanted to finish this heads-up play on my part. Anyway, I went crazy and threw the ball down, threw my hat down, threw my glove down and then kicked it! I never cussed, or even yelled at him. But I did really go crazy! I guess he thought I was ‘showing him up’ or something.

This umpire, Tom Knox was not happy! He threw me out of the game immediately, and out of the ball park! I think he wanted to throw my out of Indiana. Dan Osborne, our Coach, walked up to Tom to bargain for me, and before he said 2 words, OZ was tossed, as well! Then he looked at the rest of our team, just waiting to see if they wanted the thumb too. Nobody dared to say a word then.

So, Oz and I left, but hid behind the building outside of right field, so he could yell instructions to Augie Segyde, our right fielder, to pass on to the team. Occasionally, Mr. Knox would look behind the bleachers between innings. If he saw us, our whole team would have to forfeit this key tournament game. I couldn’t talk Oz into scidattling it out of there! But no matter. He never saw us, and we ended up winning the game.

Years later, when I was a manager at LUMS RESTAURANT near Southtown Mall, Tom came strolling into the bar room, and ordered some hot dogs and fries to go. I couldn’t resist. I told him, “Tom, You know you threw me out of a softball game years ago one time!” He didn’t remember the incident at all. But he replied, “Did you deserve it?” I replied, “OH, YES! I DEFINATELY deserved it!” He got a kick out of that response!

So I learned my lesson. I played much calmer, after that was never tossed again. Obviously, later I’ve seen Tom many times over the years, and always enjoyed pleasantries. He was a GREAT GUY! MAY GOD REST HIS SOUL.

THERESA ELIZABETH NICHOLS, 31

THERESA ELIZABETH NICHOLS, 31, of Fort Wayne died Thursday, February 8, 2018. Nearly 32 years ago God blessed our family with a little girl. The doctors said she would never live, but God set out to show us all who is in control. Many doctors would do nothing for her because they said, “she has no quality of life,” but they did not know her. Her smile would light up a room, and her joy despite her suffering blessed many lives. God used her to show His power, glory, and love. She changed our lives, and that of many others. Her presence here on earth will be greatly missed.

She is survived by parents David & Marsha; sisters, Jennie (Rob) Longardner, Maranda (Bill) Horn, Catherine (Randy) Brautzsch; niece, Addie; and nephews, Ashlee and William.

She is preceded in death by grandparents, Paul and Martha Niman, Robert Nichols, and Viola Moore; aunt, Bethany Nichols; and uncle, Kenny Niman.

Funeral was Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at 1:00 PM at Elzey-Patterson-Rodak Home For Funerals, 6810 Old Trail Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46809 with visitation beginning at 11:00 AM. Burial was in Prairie Grove Cemetery.

Preferred memorials may be made to the family. Visit www.elzey-patterson-rodak funeralhome.com to leave condolences.
