SANDHILL CRANES
A whooping crane from the migration class of 2001 has been spotted in the company of sandhill cranes at Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife area near Medaryville, Ind.
The bird was first spotted at the property on Saturday, Nov. 16. It was seen the previous day in northern Illinois near the Wisconsin border. It left Marquette County, Wis. about a week ago. The male bird known as “#6” is outfitted with a radio transmitter so that researchers can track its movements. It is one of five cranes that returned to Wisconsin this past spring after learning to migrate by following an ultralight plane to Florida in the fall of 2001.
Property manager Jim Bergens expects to see hundreds of people flock to Jasper-Pulaski for a chance to see the whooper and thousands of sandhill cranes.
The property typically has around 20,000 bird-watching visitors in October and November.
