Hi everyone!

I’m so happy to be traveling, and am having a great time! I’ve just returned to Cape Town after 2 weeks in Botswana/Zimbabwe that were absolutely fantastic, and thought I’d send a quick trip update.

Gia and I started the trip with a few days in Cape Town. It’s a beautiful city, and we’ve been staying on the waterfront in an area that actually reminds me of San Francisco in a lot of ways. We were able to fit a lot into those first few days, including a trip to the top of Table Mountain where we had great views of the city and coast, a full-day trip to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope, which are at the southwestern most tip of the continent (stopping along the way to do a boat trip to see seals and a walk to see an African Penguin colony), and a fascinating tour of Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was held captive for 19 of his 27 years as a political prisoner.

For the Robben Island visit, an ex-political prisoner gave us a tour of the prison facility, while describing his own heartbreaking experiences to us. It was amazing to hear his stories of being detained without a trial, eventually being convicted and jailed as a political prisoner, and suffering physical, emotional, and psychological torture while imprisoned for 6-7 years, and then to hear him talk so positively about reconciliation and the current efforts towards unity in South Africa. In fact, everyone we’ve spoken with in Cape Town has been really positive about how far things have progressed since apartheid was abolished, and how proud they are to be South African now.

On the 18th, we flew from Cape Town to Maun, Botswana to start our 11-day safari. I can’t begin to describe how incredible the safari was! Our wildlife viewing began right away, as we immediately flew out of Maun on a small plane and could spot elephants from the air. We landed on a dirt airstrip where they had a Land Rover waiting for us, met the 5 other people we’d be traveling with, had some lunch, and immediately had our first game drive on the way to our camp. I don’t have enough time to describe all of the amazing safari/wildlife experiences, so I’ll have to stick to a few highlights. Continued in the March 17th issue of The Waynedale News.
