I Want A Dog

“But mom!” cried Lilly.

“There are no buts about it, you’re not getting a dog!” said Lilly’s mom.

Lilly wanted a dog so bad. She pretty much knew that idea was nothing but a speck of dust, because her brother always has allergic reactions to anything with dandruff. But then, Lilly thought, “Maybe if I show a lot of responsibility, Jacob will get over it!” Lilly thought again, “Better yet… it could be a graduation present!” Lilly would graduate the fifth grade in a month so this could work.

Lilly took the garbage out, sometimes even when it was not full. Lilly turned off the television if it was not in use, she even cleaned her room, and windexed throughout the house. At dinner Mom thanked her one night and told her she was proud. But that night Mom also said she knew what was going on, and a dog wouldn’t work.

“I hate Jacob! He has to be allergic doesn’t he?” said Lilly.

Mom shook her head, “I’m sorry but you won’t get a dog.”

“Well, obviously!” said Lilly under her breath, but obviously mom heard because Lilly got grounded.

When days passed, it was graduation. She tried to forget the dog, and move on. She had a wonderful time. Most parents were crying, even Lilly’s mom. After they had cake and punch and sang some songs, everyone headed home.

In the car, Mom made Lilly wear a headband around her eyes. Lilly thought, “It’s a dog!” But it wasn’t.

When mom pulled off the headband, there was a large fish tank against the wall with coral reefs, seaweed and more details. But best of all, there were two red tail sharks, a turtle, four goldfish, some snails, and a fat long fish. And I must have made a mistake because, best of all, this was Lilly’s! Mom gave Lilly the responsibility of cleaning the large tank, and feeding all of her new underwater pets! And maybe I made another mistake, because these pets don’t have dandruff!
