GET CAUGHT ON THE ABOITE TRAILS
In celebration of National Trails Day, Aboite New Trails will host its 2nd annual Get Caught on the Aboite Trails event this Sunday, June 7, from 2-4 p.m., during which volunteers will give away free prizes such as t-shirts, YMCA day passes, water bottles, and Model T Bicycle Rentals gift certificates to trail users of all ages enjoying the Aboite Trails. Event sponsors include Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne Cardiology, Integrity Financial and Tax Consulting, Crazy Sisters Coffee Roasters, and Model T Bicycle Rentals.
The Get Caught event will kick off at 2 p.m., when volunteers will begin ‘catching’ trail users along the trails on Scott, Eggeman, Aboite Center, Homestead, Liberty Mills, Amber, and West Hamilton Roads, the Lutheran Hospital Loop Trail, and the loop at Indian Trails Park. New surprises this year include a visit from the Real Geek Riders at 2:30 p.m. in front of Deer Ridge Elementary School on the Scott Road Trail. These self-named geeks are riding their bikes across America, stopping in Fort Wayne, in an effort to inspire other ‘geeks’ to change their commuting habits. Trail users also can expect to see several Model T four-wheeled, canopied pedacycles on the trails along Homestead Road, Scott Road, and Indian Trails Park, as well as Jorgensen YMCA employees leading stretches along several trail stops.
There are currently 11 miles of Aboite Trails with 3.5 more scheduled for construction in 2009. Aboite New Trails currently is working to raise $350K needed to complete a 41-mile cross-county trail corridor, which will stretch from Aboite to the Rivergreenway to New Haven via the Towpath Trail.
