LETTER CARRIERS STAMP OUT HUNGER!

On Saturday, May 12, Fort Wayne letter carriers will join forces with Campbell Soup Company as part of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger! food drive.  Now in its 15th year, the Stamp Out Hunger! effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, having collected more than 765 million pounds of food since its inception in 1993.

Last year, letter carriers in Northeast Indiana from NALC Branch 116 collected 300,308 pounds of food, and all donated items stay in the community it was collected.

To help Stamp Out Hunger! in Fort Wayne this year, simply leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to your mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on May 12. Food items should be in non-breakable containers, such as boxes and cans. Local Fort Wayne letter carriers will then collect donations from homes across the city and deliver them to the Associated Churches food banks. The number of people served by the Associated Churches food banks has grown from 7500 individuals in 1979 to 80,000 in 2005. The number one community food collection each year is the Letter Carriers Food Drive. The 300,000 pounds of food collected equals 158,000 meals. This will feed 10,500 individuals a 5-day supply of food. In other words, it will feed the people with hunger needs in our community for two months.

According to America’s Second Harvest – The Nation’s Food Bank Network, 35 million people are food insecure, hungry or at risk of hunger. Approximately one in four people in a soup kitchen line is a child.
