MIAMI ‘LADY’ INDIANS ARE CHAMPIONS AGAIN!

The Miami Middle School Lady Indians are champions again of the FWCS basketball league. This is their second consecutive championship and their sixth overall. The Lady Indians adopted the theme, “Those who stay, will be champions!” as their vocal inspiration this season. It was a theme that was chosen by accident. The team started out with 20 players after final cuts were made, but as the season wore down, many of the players quit or transferred to other schools, leaving the basketball team with just 12 players. Instead of getting discouraged and giving up, the girls rallied around their coaches and each other and adopted the phrase, “Those who stay, will be champions!”

The Lady Indians not only finished the season as city champions, but, did it UNDEFEATED!! The varsity team was 14-0, their first undefeated season since the 2002-03 season when they went 15-0. The girls showed great intensity and attention to detail as they swept through everyone they faced. Most of their games were never in doubt after the first quarter. The Lady Indians averaged an amazing 54 points per game while giving up only 20 points per game. It was the largest winning margin the Lady Indians has ever accomplished. The junior varsity was 9-1 on the season. The remarkable thing about the Miami Indian girl’s team is that nearly all of them are returning next season. There were only three 8th graders on the team.

The championship game was business as usual for the Lady Indians. The girls jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Blackhawk was stopped at every possible scoring spot on the floor. It was a tribute to how the girls played all season. When the smoke cleared, the Lady Indians had defeated the Eagles 42-20. It was the largest margin of victory of the six championship games the Miami team has played in. Most of the season, the Lady Indians were successful through balanced scoring. It was the same in the championship game. Brierra Young, Jomani Thomas, and Lynnia Noel each scored 9 points, Jamesha Ridley added 8 points, and Jill Lee chipped in with 4 points.

Carrying the primary load in scoring this season were Jamesha Ridley (7th grade) 16.2 ppg, Brierra Young (8th grade) 13.6 ppg, Jomani Thomas (7th grade) 9.1 ppg, Jillian Lee (8th grade) 6.0 ppg, and Lynnia Noel (6th grade) 5.0 ppg. It wasn’t just about the scoring, the girls played together, doing whatever they needed to do, on the court and off, to complete an awesome season.

The Lady Indians are coached by Isaac Davis, Stan Kennedy, Arnold Lewis and Greg Noel. Mr. Hal Stevens is the principal and Ms. Deedra Heckstall is the athletic director.
