HAPPY 100 DUDLEY WASS
With advancing age, speech has become difficult for Dudley Wass, but remind him that March 17, his 100th birthday, is approaching, and his eyes brighten.
The day promises to be special for Dudley as his family hosts friends and relatives for a celebration from 2 to 4 p.m. at Kingston Residence, 7515 Winchester Road, where Dudley has lived since 2001.
Born to Samuel and Sarah Ella Wass in a home at 1409 Creighton Avenue, Dudley grew up with seven siblings: Sam, Donald, Byron, Robert, Mildred, Dorothy and Jane. His mother lived to celebrate her 101st birthday; his father lived to be 97. The senior Wass’ were married for 75 years.
Dudley and his wife, the former Marjorie Pearson, raised two sons, Dudley II and Greg, in their home on Kinsmoor Avenue while Dudley worked as a salesman at the old Wolf and Dessauer, then at Ethan Allen and finally at Zeigler’s Window Coverings. Later, there would be six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
After retiring, Dudley had time for his favorite pastimes, reading, traveling, gardening and attending dances with Marjorie. He also enjoys playing Uno with his grandchildren. Together, the Wass’ traveled around the world, delivered Homebound Meals and enjoyed the Philharmonic concerts.
In February of 1996, Marjorie slipped into a coma as they were returning home from a Philharmonic concert. She died a week later. They had been married for 50 years.
The attention that goes along with turning 100 seems slightly overwhelming to Dudley, but it is a milestone he has been looking forward to for many months.
“How do you feel about being 100 years old?” he is asked.
He nods his head and just smiles.
