COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

City recently passed the budget of the City of Fort Wayne for 2007. There was a strong effort to cut funding for 20 new police officers from the budget. Happily, that didn’t occur. I’ve always said that public safety is the first job of local government and Police Chief Rusty York presented solid evidence that these additional officers are necessary to protect the citizens of this community.

As you are probably aware, the County Commissioners (not Fort Wayne City Council) are currently considering an ordinance regulating smoking in restaurants and other facilities throughout Allen County. Whatever the Commissioners decide I certainly hope they will write a county ordinance in such a way as to make sure that businesses which have invested in non-smoking rooms won’t have spent thousands of dollars in vain.

I recently attended an event honoring our Air Force Reserve troops who are part of the 122nd Air Force Reserve Unit at Fort Wayne International Airport. I am a former U.S. Air Force officer and have always been very supportive of our USAF Reserve officers and enlisted men and women. The local reserve unit has been a big part of our military efforts in Iraq. If you have the opportunity, give these folks a big pat on the back for their brave efforts in our behalf.

Give me a call with any concerns or suggestions regarding our city!
