HAYHURST LAUNCHES CONGRESSIONAL CAMPAIGN FOCUSING ON ISSUES, REMEMBERING OUR TROOPS

Surrounded by family, friends and supporters, Dr. Tom Hayhurst officially kicked off his campaign for Indiana’s 3rd District seat in the United States House of Representatives. He declared his intention to run at news conferences in Fort Wayne and Goshen, Indiana – two corners of the district.

“I’m running for Congress because everywhere I go people tell me they’re worried about the direction our country is heading,” stated Hayhurst. “I believe that by working together we can change that. I’m running for Congress because everywhere I go people tell me it’s time for our government to focus on what really matters: affordable health care, creating and keeping good jobs, safeguarding America, investing in education, preserving Social Security and treating our veterans fairly. Those will be my priorities. I’m running for Congress because I believe that together we can transform our hard work, hope and hometown values into a fresh start for Indiana’s 3rd Congressional District.”

Hayhurst brings to his campaign a lifelong passion for public service, a dedication demonstrated in his commitment to neighborhoods, his 10 years on Fort Wayne City Council, and his 30 years as a practicing pulmonary physician in northeast Indiana.

In keeping with that same spirit and as a United States Air Force veteran, he used his campaign announcement to call attention to the needs of our military troops. Supporters were asked to bring supplies to the media events for assembly into “military care packages.” Volunteers will coordinate the preparation and transmission of these donations to our soldiers in the field.

Hayhurst’s medical career has extended beyond his care for thousands of patients and their families. He co-founded the Matthew 25 Health and Dental Clinic’s free pulmonary clinic, and he works each week at the Allen County Infectious Diseases (Tuberculosis) Clinic.

In September 2005, Hayhurst took his emergency-preparedness skills to Marksville, Louisiana, where he worked as a physician-volunteer helping 500 Katrina-displaced residents find their balance again.

“Preserving, sustaining and bettering life has been my calling – my life’s work,” noted Hayhurst. “That same belief motivated my first bid for public office. It inspires me yet today. And it is the conviction that fuels my campaign for Congress.”

As a three-term member of the Fort Wayne City Council, Hayhurst has been a roll-up-your-sleeves citizen legislator who knows how to get things done. Solving problems and advocating for his constituents have been his hallmarks. He has been a champion for job creation, economic growth and educational initiatives – the key to our future prosperity. He understands that by working together we can build strong neighborhoods, strong communities and a strong district.

During the Vietnam War, Hayhurst served his country honorably as a United States Air Force medical officer. His loyalty to our armed forces, present and past, was translated into action last year when the Veterans Administration Northern Indiana Hospital’s future in Fort Wayne was threatened, potentially causing hundreds of patients to travel long distances for medical care.

In response, he helped start Veterans for Better Health Care. From the grass roots, he and other veterans are fighting to retain essential services at the local facility. The group’s actions were recently rewarded when the Veterans Administration gave the closure a temporary reprieve while a new study of need is conducted.

“The promises made to those who put themselves on the line for liberty’s sake are promises that must be kept, especially in this time of war when we ask yet another generation to make the ultimate sacrifice,” observed Hayhurst. “I will be a real, responsive voice for our veterans when I am in Washington.”

A native of northeast Indiana, Hayhurst and his wife, Judy, live in Fort Wayne. He is a graduate of North Side High School and Indiana University School of Medicine.

“Judy and I are deeply connected to this corner of Indiana,” added Hayhurst. “It’s where we raised our family. It’s where we worship and volunteer our time. Like you, it’s a place we are proud to call home. As your Congressman, I will work hard to keep it that way and make it better for all of us. As your Congressman, I believe that I can make a positive difference in the lives of children and families throughout the 3rd District and across our great country.”

Indiana’s 3rd Congressional District is located in northeast Indiana and encompasses all of DeKalb, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben and Whitley Counties. It also includes nearly all of Allen County (the entire city of Fort Wayne) and most of Elkhart County.
