COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

Fort Wayne’s greenway system continues to expand. As you are probably aware, a major extension of the greenway system from Swinney Park to Rockhill Park was recently dedicated. This week I’m planning to spend some time checking out the next proposed link of the greenway from Rockhill Park along the “Junk Ditch” to a point near the intersection of West Jefferson Blvd. and Engle Road. The greenway is a great way to get some exercise and save a few dollars that would have otherwise been spent on gasoline as well!

There’s been quite a bit of discussion recently about truck routes all over the city. This isn’t just a “west side” issue—when the proposed Maplecrest Road extension opens in the future many residents on the north and east side of town will also be affected. The issue of our city truck ordinance—which is not really enforceable—has been ignored for years. I’m going to do my best to make sure that we have a truck ordinance that respects both businesses and residential areas—we’ll see if there’s the political will in city government to get that job done.

Recently a zoning matter affecting citizens who live along Ardmore Avenue went before the Board of Zoning Appeals. The BZA made its decision which, as is often the case, made some citizens happy and aggravated others. The amazing fact is that I received only one telephone call regarding this matter during the last 3 months. Only after the BZA decision was I told that 100 citizens had signed a position regarding this matter—a petition which was given to the planning department staff but not forwarded to me. I’ve fought many battles since I’ve been a City Councilman—but I can only do that if citizens contact me with their concerns. I’ll continue to monitor the effects of this BZA ruling and to fight to protect every neighborhood in the 4th District. Be sure to let me know if there are strong feelings in your neighborhood regarding any matter of importance!

The Johnny Appleseed Festival is coming to town later this month. This festival is a great community event—with lots of events for kids. See ya’ there.

As I mentioned earlier, give me a call with any questions or constructive suggestions you have to help make Fort Wayne a better city!
