COUNCILMAN’S CORNER

Greetings! ‑I hope you’re enjoying this great holiday season! ‑The snow that comes at this time of the year helps make this a great season. However, sometimes the snow can make it a bit hard to get around. ‑Don’t forget that after a major snowfall the Street Department first plows off the major traffic “arterials” such as Bluffton Road, Ardmore, Lower Huntington Road and Engle Road. ‑Then the snowplows move into residential areas. In recent years we’ve made a major effort to purchase new snow removal equipment for the Street Department I predict that snow removal will go well this winter. ‑Sometimes a cul-de-sac street or other street is inadvertently missed by the snow removal crews. ‑If that happens, call the Street Department at 427-1235 and if the snow isn’t plowed quickly give me a call at the number below.

Recently there has been quite a bit of discussion regarding how city code should deal with wolf hybrids and other similar dog breeds. While there’s no question that pit bulls, rottweilers, and wolf hybrids can make good pets. These and a few other breeds are definitely at the top of the list as dogs that are more likely than others to attack people, as well as other animals. We’re currently in the process of trying to work out some wording for city code that balances the rights of the pet owner with those of citizens who shouldn’t have to worry about their kids being attacked by a dog. I’ll give you a follow-up on this matter in a later column. ‑

Many of you who drive up and down Ardmore Avenue are aware that changes are underway for that thoroughfare. ‑After years of work the Ardmore/Hillegas extension is scheduled to open either late this year or early next year. ‑The Ardmore extension from Lower Huntington Road to Airport Expressway will probably be completed during 2004. ‑Many details still need to be worked out but when Ardmore is completed the city will have a much needed north-south traffic arterial on the west side of the city. ‑One of the results will hopefully be more business for retailers in the Waynedale area.

Recently I’ve had the opportunity to speak with local veterans and other citizens who are concerned about the future of our local VA hospital. ‑As I understand it, there are over 40,000 military veterans in NE Indiana. ‑While I can sympathize with the logic in making sure that the VA Hospital doesn’t have excessive inpatient beds, vets deserve adequate outpatient services and they shouldn’t have to travel to Indy or Michigan for inpatient treatment if they develop pneumonia or have a heart attack! ‑Let me know your thoughts regarding this issue!

Have an enjoyable holiday season with your family and friends—and keep warm! ‑Call me or email me if you have any suggestions as to how we can improve our fine city.
