ABOUT THE PLAY:  It’s not often a truly original holiday musical comes along.  This critically acclaimed holiday treat is family entertainment at its best.  Based on true events from the late 19th Century, it tells the story of a Great Lakes shipping captain who braves the deadly winter weather on Lake Michigan to sail to Chicago and deliver a cargo of Christmas trees to homesick German-American families.  The play hits all the right notes, in its beautiful songs and its dialogue.  It is a celebration of the immigrant experience, the hard work that helped build this country, and the faith of a people that kept them striving to make themselves better.  This is a truly beautiful celebration of the American spirit.

The cast features Scott Rumage as captain Peter Stossel; with Nancy Kartholl, Joel Scribner and Aaron Bartscht as his wife father and son.  The rest of the cast includes:  Eileen Ahlersmeyer, Grace Bachwich, Sasha Bachwich, Andrew Gingrich, Andrew Gross, Brett Hunter, Deb McMeen, Scott McMeen, and Mike Palmreuter. FPT Artistic Director Thom Hofrichter is directing the production; Jeanette Snyder-Walsh is the musical director; Lisa Root the choreographer.  Set design is my Jennifer Schmied; and Virginia Badour is designing costumes.

GIVE A GIFT

There’s one gift you can give that doesn’t require a manual, programming or even batteries.  In fact it won’t cost you a dime.  You can give the gift of life by choosing to become an organ donor.  The National Kidney Foundation of Indiana (KNFI) is encouraging all Americans to get into the true spirit of giving by simply signing a donor card and discussing their wishes with their family.

There are more than 78,000 men, women, and children in need of a life-saving organ in the U.S. with nearly 800 awaiting a transplant in Indiana.  If every American chose to become an organ donor, this waiting list could be wiped out forever.  Sign a donor card; it may be the one gift that could change someone’s life.  For more information or to receive your free organ donor card, call 1-800-382-9971.

The congregation of the Nine Mile United Brethren Church was first organized in January 1853, in the home of John Miller by the Reverend Casey, with sixteen charter members.  One acre of ground was sold to the church by Daniel and Lucy Ann buskirk for $10.  This land became the location of the church.  The congregation is now made up of 130+ members.  A table of memorabilia and pictures of past church events will be on display.  If you have any such items you want displayed please contact the church office at 260-747-3459.  All former pastors and those who attended the Nine Methodist Church in the past are invited to be part of this special program to start our celebration of our 150th year.  Our present pastor, Reverend Joseph Haney, invites everyone to be part of this day and the events that will occur throughout 2003.  The Sesquicentennial Committee looks forward to celebrating the past, present, and the future of the Nine Mile United Methodist Church throughout the year of 2003.
