UNIVERSITY OF SAINT FRANCIS
USF EXCEEDS RESIDENCE HALL CAPACITY
Steve Briggs, Director of Residential Life at USF, has announced that the university has received more requests for on-campus housing for the 2002/2003 academic year than can be accommodated. As a result, 12 upper-class women students will be housed at the Aston Pointe apartment complex for this year. The Office of Residential Life has also made arrangements for temporary overflow housing in a lower-level study room to house six men. The capacity of the university’s three residence halls is 240. “Requests for on-campus housing continue to come in,” Mr. Briggs noted. “We may not have a final number until late next week,” Classes began on Monday, August 26 for the fall semester.
USF PATHWAYS ART AUCTION TO BENEFIT HOMELESS AND RUNAWAY CHILDREN
What: Pathways Art Auction hosted by Mimi and Ian Rolland
When: Thursday, September 19, 2002 at 9pm.
Where: Mimi and Ian Rolland Art and Visual Communication Center, USF, Leesburg Road between Spring Street and Main Street.
Cost: $75/person or $100/couple. Casual attire/western optional. Hors d’oeuvres provided and cash bar.
Entertainment: Provided by Mark and Kedrah
Note: Pathways was founded in 1991 by Dr. Michel Sturm to help homeless and runaway children ages 12 to 21 and to provide crisis intervention and emergency shelter for these vulnerable youths. These children, who are not served by the judicial system or the child protective service program, “fall through the cracks.” Pathways is committed to providing the much-needed resources to help give these children a chance to succeed. BLHS HOST TO SISTER CITY STUDENTS
BLHS recently hosted twelve students, two teachers, and one tour guide from Fushiki High School, in our sister city of Takaoka, Japan. The guests arrived at FW International Airport on August 23, 2002 at 3:35pm. Host families met them at the airport. On August 26, the students attended classes at BLHS. On August 27, they were treated to breakfast at the Window Garden Restaurant, hosted by the FW Sister Cities Committee. Afterward they met with Mayor Richard at the City-County Building. They then toured Freimann Square, Allen County Courthouse, FW Visitors Center, and the Cathedral. On August 28, BLHS had an all-school assembly to welcome our visitors and on August 28, they spent the day at St. John the Baptist School on Fairfield Avenue. Our student visitors departed FW International Airport for home on August 30.
BLHS TAILGATER INVITATION
Join your fellow BLHS Knights fans for a home opening tailgater, Luers Vs Southside on Friday, September 6, 2002 at 5pm, featuring Nelson’s Port-A-Chicken. Bring a blanket or eat in the bleachers. BLHS TO OFFER DRIVERS ED
BLHS will offer Drivers Ed this fall if there is enough students interested. The classroom session will be September 3, 2002 through September 26, 2002 from 3:30pm to 5:30pm, Monday through Thursday. Driving times will begin on October 7th. The class will be limited to 28 students. Cost is $290 for BLHS students and $310 for all others. U.S. COMMISSION FOR SCHOLASTIC ASSISTANCE
COLLEGE TUITION ASSISTANCE
A conservative estimate of college costs for a full-time student runs from $10,000-$30,000; high cost colleges can run from $40,000-$100,000! Most parents and students think that scholarships are only for the students with excellent grades, low-income families, or the athletically inclined. A small example of the numerous scholarship available to students include: Handicapped Student Scholarship, Members of a Church Scholarships, Scholarships for “C” Students, Veteran Children’s Scholarship, Scholarships for Minorities and much, much more.
Though the majority of scholarships are from the Federal Government and are merit and/or need-based, billions of dollars are available to students from private sector scholarships. Much or private sector financial aid goes unused because the parents and students do not know how or where to apply.
There are organizations that have spent hundreds of hours in research locating scholarship sources. The U.S. Commission for Scholastic Assistance – College Bound is such an organization and supplies the public with over 900 different private scholarships sources. The scholarship list includes the scholarship names, addresses, application deadlines, summaries about the scholarships and the amount the scholarship will pay your child.
Many scholarships pay the entire tuition; others can be applied towards tuition, living expenses, and/or other fees. Most scholarships can be used at junior colleges, career and vocational schools, 4-year colleges, graduate schools, medical and law schools.
