LAUGHTER KEEPS US “YOUNG” AT HEART

…a slogan that Helyn Good Young has lived by all of her life. Helyn was surrounded by her friends and family, at the Waynedale United Methodist Church, on Saturday, April 4, to celebrate her 90th birthday.

Pianist Joe Thomas filled the air with beautiful music as guests arrived and he provided musical interludes throughout the afternoon. The fun-filled program featured “THOSE GUYS”, a barbershop quartet, the ALLEY KAT dancers and food catered by CLASSIC CAFÉ.

Young was born in Texas while her father was building oil derricks during the oil boom of 1919 and her first 14 years involved 14 moves. The final move for her was to Waynedale where she has lived over 75 years. She has lived in her present home since it was built over 68 years ago.

She operated her own hair salon there until she retired at age 80. Young volunteered in many activities over the years, including the American Red Cross bloodmobile and the Fort Wayne International Airport Hospitality Host program. From the time she joined the volunteer program in 1999 until she retired in 2005, Young welcomed, helped and offered a cookie to over 16,200 passengers and visitors with giving over 850 hours of service to the host program.

She is a charter member of the Waynedale Chapter 600 of the Order of Eastern Star, and a member of the Daughters of the Nile, Teti Sheri Temple No. 60. Young’s church activities are especially meaningful to her and she seldom misses a “Friends Circle or “Young at Heart” meeting. Her enthusiasm and smiles have touched many people over the years.
