LOCAL TEENS PURSUE AND EXPLORE
HELLINGER PURSUES GLOBAL LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Miss Michelle Hellinger of Wexsford Drive in Fort Wayne, has been selected to participate in the Global Young Leaders Conference (GYLC) from July 17 to July 28, 2005 in Washington, D.C. and New York City. GYLC is a unique leadership development program for secondary school students from around the world who have demonstrated leadership potential and scholastic merit. Hellinger will be among 400 outstanding scholars from across the globe to attend the conference.
The theme of GYLC is The Leaders of Tomorrow Preparing for the Global Challenges and Responsibilities of the Future. Hellinger, a student of Bishop Luers High School, will interact with key leaders and newsmakers with powerful influence over politics, finance, culture and diplomacy, and will take part in a carefully designed curriculum, which includes thought-provoking simulations that build leadership skills.
“The Global Young Leaders Conference aims to provide students like Michelle Hellinger with the opportunity to collaborate with students from around the world to both study and resolve global conflict,” said Mike Lasday, executive director of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council (CYLC), the organization that sponsors the GYLC. “When ideas and points of view are shared, the true results of the Conference are realized.”
GYLC culminates with the Global Summit, in which students apply what they’ve learned throughout the Conference as they debate, negotiate, and build coalitions dealing with issues such as foreign aid, global warming, co-operative efforts in space, terrorism and human rights. Past highlights of the program include welcoming remarks from a variety of young leaders who make and leave their mark on the international community, a briefing at the U.S. Department of State, an address at the United Nations and site visits at financial institutions on Wall Street, among several other events.
RORICK EXPLORES TECH INDUSTRY
Mr. James Rorick of Wayne High School was recently admitted to the National Youth Leadership Forum on Technology (NYLF/TECH). From June 27 – July 6, 2005 Rorick, who lives on Gilbert Drive in Waynedale will join 1,800 high school students from across the United States in San Jose, California for an exploration of the field of technology.
Throughout the ten-day program Rorick will engage in both group and independent projects, including workshops led by industry insiders, product demonstrations, campus visits and tech-commerce encounters. The Forum’s curriculum also consists of animated debate and discussion.
“The National Youth Leadership Forum on Technology provides an opportunity for tomorrow’s innovators like James Rorick to build upon and add to their skills, while also receiving inspiration and direction from today’s technology leaders,” said Donna Snyder, executive director of NYLF. “Many of these students are already making their mark in this exciting career field. The Forum helps them become better directed and better connected as they go about finding the right fit within the world of technology.”
Currently slated to speak at NYLF/TECH are: Jaron Lanier, Virtual Reality Pioneer and Computer Scientist; Shawn Fanning, founder and developer of Napster; Helen Grenier, chairman and co-founder of iRobot; and Guy Kawasaki, co-founder and managing director of Garage Technology Ventures and columnist for Forbes. Additional companies and institutions to take part in the Forum’s curriculum include Symantec Corporation, Affymetrix Inc., Sun Microsystems, Inc., Stanford University, University of California Berkeley, University of California Santa Cruz, Santa Clara University, San Jose State University, San Francisco State University and many others.
