Congratulations to Scott’s Groceries and to the entire southside of Fort Wayne on the recent $4 million renovation of the Waynedale Scott’s store. The ribbon cutting at the Waynedale store on June 27th was quite a party with the Scott’s founders receiving a welcome usually reserved for rock stars! I’m sure that the new store will do plenty of business and be a great success!

I’ve been receiving calls recently regarding the use of fireworks in residential neighborhoods. It appears that some of these devices carry lots of explosive power, especially when windows of homes a block away are rattled. As you probably know, Indiana law was recently changed to allow the purchase and use of fireworks in our state. Whatever the decisions of our state representatives, I believe a bit of common sense needs to be applied to this situation. I recently had the opportunity to discuss fireworks with Fire Chief Tim Davie. He’s also obviously concerned about the possibility of fires and injuries with the increased use fireworks. Please monitor kids using these devices so injuries can be prevented. If fireworks noise isn’t tolerable, call the FWPD Desk Sergeant at 427-1222 and ask a police officer to be dispatched to determine if the city noise ordinance is being violated.

Many citizens in the Waynedale area are concerned about the limited hours of the refurbished Waynedale library. I’ve lobbied the Fort Wayne Public Library leadership regarding this issue without much success to date. If you’re concerned, I suggest you contact members of the Library Board regarding this problem. Check the library website for their names and contact information. I’ll keep doing what I can to improve access to the library. However, Library Board members have control of the library’s budget and scheduling procedures, not City Council.

Don’t forget the great Waynedale Family Picnic scheduled for Saturday, August 26. Beulah Stoker, Cheryl Connett, Renee Haugh, and other organizers recently received a great boost from Scott’s Grocery Stores in the form of a check for $1000 and lots of free food and drinks! Hats off to Scott’s for their support of this FREE kid-oriented community event!

Give me a call with any thoughts or suggestions as to how we can make this an even better community.
