On Saturday, August 26, 2006 the Fort Wayne Fire Department Scuba Team and the Northern Indiana Search and Rescue (NISAR) team trained at Stone Lake, behind FWFD Station #5 off of Bluffton Road.

The focus of the training was to use the NISAR’s search dog’s ability to smell to help pinpoint the location of drowning or near-drowning victims.

“It was a great opportunity to train with NISAR and their search dogs,” said Battalion Chief Brian Meeks, FWFD Special Operations. “The chance to practice with this group which covers the northern 1/3 of Indiana, allows FWFD to prepare for those incidents in which we would be working with NISAR to familiarize ourselves with the equipment and their processes and them familiarizing themselves with ours. This collaboration helps strengthen our response to these types of incidences.”

NISAR performed other search and rescue training activities as well throughout the day in the nearby wooded area.
