BUILDING A BRIDGE IN WAYNEDALE
You could hear the banging of pile driver sitting in The Waynedale News office on Lower Huntington Road. Just down the street, close to where the Boy Scout house used to sit, the pile driver was banging a large steel pipe all the way down to limestone. It was a bright sunny day and the workmen closely monitored the distance the hollow steel pipe sank for each 20 hits of the big hammer. When the pipe refuses to go any deeper, it is cut to the proper height and filled with concrete.
The new bridge will be a four-span unit, which means there will be four sets of pilings for the 70-foot long structure. The 5.6 million dollar project is scheduled to be completed in four months, but the local residents are hopping for an earlier completion date.
Rick Evan, project manager and employed by DLZ Consulting explained that there is always a chance that the bridge will be finished before June 3rd which is the bid package end date. Weather as well as other uncontrollable factors will determine when traffic flow will return to normal.
