VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP
It is hard to believe fall is here already. The summer always seems to go so quickly.
As we get into fall, we are going to have to start up our furnaces again. And, we will have to start planning for those high winter heating bills we all dread.
Our office, along with several other agencies and utility companies, will be participating in an Energy Fair on October 6 to help all of us better manage our winter heating costs. The Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Andorfer Commons Building at Indiana Institute of Technology, 1600 East Washington Blvd. It is free, and plenty of parking is available. IIT also is on a bus line.
Representatives from my staff will be at the Fair to explain utility assistance we can offer to persons who meet our eligibility standards. One of our goals in co-sponsoring this Fair is to help Wayne Township residents understand the importance of avoiding having their utility service disconnected. Once service is disconnected, utility companies often want a sizeable deposit to get service re-started. Often people don’t have the money to pay a large deposit. While my office can help pay utility bills; unfortunately, in most cases, our eligibility standards prevent us from paying utility deposits.
During the winter, by State law, utility companies cannot disconnect gas service for those who have applied and received EAP energy assistance through CANI. The “moratorium” on shut-offs begins on December 1 and runs through March 15. But, when March 15 rolls around, service will be disconnected unless the utility customer is either current on his or her utility bill or has some kind of payment arrangement with the utility company.
In addition to my office, NIPSCO and AEP will have representatives at the Energy Fair. So will CANI and the Office of Utility Consumer Counselor. These persons will be available to answer questions about your winter heating bills.
Winter weatherization information will be available at the Fair from home improvement stores. The stores will even present demonstrations on how to weatherize your home. This Fair also will have giveaways, prizes and activities for children. It is a way to receive very important information in a fun atmosphere and another way the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office is reaching out to the community to help Wayne Township residents.
Besides the Energy Fair, my Office is very busy preparing for our annual Health Fair and Veterans’ Stand Down. This event will be at the Wayne Township Office on October 26 and will offer numerous health screenings for uninsured and underinsured persons. Keep this date in mind, and I will have more details as this event draws closer.
