VOICE OF THE TOWNSHIP
As always, my staff and I have been very busy in the two weeks since I wrote my last column. Our Employment Program continues to grow and to succeed in helping Wayne Township assistance clients find employment.
We are conducting employment training for clients every Wednesday at the Trustee’s Office. The Wednesday programs not only feature a speaker and job tips from Wayne Township staff; but give clients the opportunity to encourage each other and to share job tips and successes.
While some clients were reluctant at first to attend these sessions, many now have changed their attitudes and are enthusiastic about participating.
On Wednesday, March 12, 2008, volunteers Sandra Newsom and Terah Green from the Fort Wayne African American Cancer Alliance presented an interesting program to clients about maintaining good health.
Also at the March 12 training, a client, who has been unemployed and receiving Township Assistance for several months, was so inspiring when she told her fellow participants she would be starting a new job in a few weeks. What a joy it was for me to share in her success and accept her thank you for the help she received at the Wayne Township Trustee’s Office.
I was extremely honored to receive on March 7 the Citizen of the Year Award from the Northeast Region of the National Association of Social Workers. I was presented the award by Micah Farmer, the organization’s Regional Representative, at a luncheon at Lutheran Hospital.
I was overwhelmed and humbled by the kind remarks Ms. Farmer made when presenting the award to me. I was born in Fort Wayne and love this community. I feel I have been very blessed to be given the opportunity to serve as Wayne Township Trustee and to help my home community.
I told you in the last issue about the process I have undertaken with my supervisory staff to update our Eligibility Standards. The new Eligibility Standards are completed now and were approved by the Wayne Township Board at its meeting on March 11. The new Standards will take effect on April 1.
The Easter Egg Hunt, which Wayne Township sponsors, is Saturday, March 22, the first day this issue of the Waynedale News is circulated.
I want to thank everyone who helped with this year’s Easter Egg Hunt, including volunteers, Wayne Township staff and those who made donations to make this event possible. The coordinators for this event were Tameka Crook and Denial Cannon from our Outreach staff.
The Easter Egg Hunt is one of several events the Trustee’s Office sponsors throughout the year in our role as advocate and helper for the less fortunate in our Township.
