GOTR CELEBRATORY 5K RACE & MASCOT DASH

GOTR 2016As one of more than 200 councils of Girls on the Run (GOTR) International, GOTR of Northeast Indiana, serves 8 to 11 year old girls in Northeast Indiana. Their mission is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running.

The fun of running began for these girls on March 14th and will continue with twice-weekly team meetings. The girls will be taught life skills through running games. At the end of the 10-week session, each girl is paired with an adult “running buddy.” Together, the girls and their running buddies will participate in a celebratory 5K to culminate the season – giving each girl a tangible sense of accomplishment and a belief that she “can”.

The 5K race is scheduled for Sunday, May 22, 2016, 2pm, but the festivities start at 12:30pm, at Shoaff Park. Girls On The Run participants have a free entry to the 5K but everyone is invited to run with an early registration cost of $25 until April 1st, and $30 after April 2. You can register online at www.gotr-nei.org.

The Girls on the Run of Northeast Indiana 5K is not just a 5K run/walk, it is a CELEBRATION of what the girls have achieved when they decide on a goal and put in the work required to achieve it.

The 5K Run/Walk event honors the 3rd through 5th grade Spring 2016 Girls on the Run participants. These girls have trained for 10 weeks and will be competing in their first 5K race. The public is encouraged to run with the girls as they celebrate their accomplishment.

At the event, there will be a “happy hair” station, D.J., music, a “Mascot Dash,” poster-making station and some surprises to help everyone keep their eye on the prize! Tutus are welcome! Guys are, too!

Some of the girls were running in flats that they wore to school. So, for the past two years, because of donations from the event, FREE running shoes were given to participants in the GOTR program. 100% of the proceeds from this race, benefit Girls on the Run of Northeast Indiana, a 501©3 nonprofit organization. These proceeds fund the sliding-scale registration fee, financial assistance/scholarship and their “Shoe Fairy” program, which provides the running shoes to girls at low-income sites.

If you are interested in donating, participating and/or running the 5K you can contact Gail Gerber, Chairman of Girls on the Run of Northeast Indiana, www.gotr-nei.org.
