LIONS CLUB & FORT WAYNE ELKS MATCHING DONATIONS
In 2011, the Waynedale Lions Club and the Fort Wayne Order of Elks combined their resources and their efforts to give just over 300 pounds of donated food to the Associated Churches of Fort Wayne & Allen County for their Neighborhood Food Network, a network of 28 local pantries that provide a five-day supply of food.
On December 16, 2014, the two volunteer groups combined resources once again for the same cause, this time donating $2,000 to the Associated Churches, $1,000 from each group.
“Two service organizations can do more than just one,” says Lions Club and Elk member, Jim Springer, without hesitation. Springer has been a Fort Wayne Lion for 20+ years and an Elk for twice as long.
Steve Staley, Director of Development at the Associate Churches, reiterates Springer’s statement. “It’s nice to see other non-profits come together for the greater good of the community. The Elks and the Lions are vital members of helping our community.” Staley accepted the donations, along with Roger Reese, Executive Director of the Associated Churches.
Springer was joined by fellow Lion Club members Larry Martin and Lyle Simpson, along with Elk members George Lindsey (Treasurer), Wayne Stewart (Trustee) and Betty Stewart, Exalted Ruler of the Elks. “We raise money for most of the year,” explains Betty. The Elks have raised funds for veterans groups, cancer organizations, for drug awareness campaigns and for Riley Children’s Hospital.
The Associated Churches Neighborhood Food Network served over 1.5 million meals in 2013 alone.
