Experience A Hallmark Christmas At Prairie Grove Chapel
Nestled along Old Trail Road in Waynedale stands the Prairie Grove Chapel, a historic gem dating back to the late 1850s. This little white-framed chapel, a pre-Civil War antebellum structure, has become a cherished part of the community, particularly during the Christmas season. With its eight Gothic windows adorned with candles, a brightly lit Christmas tree in one corner, and pews that hold memories of generations past, the chapel offers a nostalgic backdrop for worship and celebration.
This year, the annual Christmas services will be held on Monday, December 23, at 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM. Doors open at 4:30 PM, and admission is free, with no tickets required. Attendees can look forward to a heartwarming time of worship, followed by cookies and hot cider.
Prairie Grove Chapel’s rich history includes its near-destruction in 2008 when a fire caused by vandals severely damaged its structure. Thanks to the tireless efforts of community volunteers and donors, the chapel has risen from the ashes, restoring its charm while maintaining its historical integrity. Donations collected during events, including Christmas services, go directly toward ongoing restoration projects and a historic marker.
As one of Fort Wayne’s oldest buildings, the chapel holds a significant place in Waynedale’s history. Originally built to serve as a stop for circuit riders who preached to rural congregations, it now serves as a venue for weddings, funerals, and holiday services. “We want the chapel to be a space for everyone,” said Glenn Ellenberger, a key figure in the chapel’s restoration. “Christmas services are a tradition we hope to continue for years to come.”
The services have become a highlight of the area during the holiday season, with live music, interdenominational worship, and a sense of community spirit. Choirs, local musicians, and dedicated volunteers are invited to contact Glenn in advance to contribute to the ambience, ensuring that each service is both memorable and meaningful.
Attendees can support the chapel by making a free-will offering during the services or by sending donations to Prairie Grove Chapel, 6312 Old Trail Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46809. Funds are used to preserve and enhance this historic site to better serve visitors. For more information about the Christmas services or to inquire about using the chapel for events, contact Glenn Ellenberger at 260-760-7194.
The Prairie Grove Chapel Christmas services are more than a worship event; they’re a step back in time. As the bell rings and voices fill the small, candlelit chapel, the spirit of the season comes alive, offering a serene and holy respite from the bustle of modern life. Join the Waynedale community on December 23 to celebrate Christmas in a setting that embodies the warmth, simplicity, and enduring traditions of the season.
