GIRL SCOUTS INSTALL LITTLE FREE LIBRARY

On Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 10a.m. the Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana, Cadette Troop 20046, and the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne unveiled a Little Free Library™ at Girl Scout Corporate Office at 10008 Dupont Circle Drive East, Fort Wayne, IN 46825.

The Little Free Library was built and painted by the nine members of Cadette Troop 20046 as a Take Action project to earn their Bronze Award. The Girl Scout Bronze Award, a leadership adventure and the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. Girl Scouts develop more confidence, meet new people and have the kind of fun that happens when they work with other Girl Scouts to make a difference.

The Cadettes of Troop 20046 are very community oriented and are involved in many community service projects. They have collected canned goods for the Huntertown Methodist Food Bank, donated Build-A-Bears to the Lutheran Children’s Hospital, decorated holiday placemats for Homebound Meals of Fort Wayne, and donated to Soldiers Over Seas, the ASPCA, and Kate’s Kart. They also adopt a family in the Women’s League Transitions program every year, providing a mother and her children with a merry Christmas. The troop chose to build and decorate a Little Free Library because, “We voted that this would be perfect and think it is super awesome that this is our legacy we will leave for other Girls Scouts in the future.”

The Rotary Club of Fort Wayne provided the official Little Free Library charter and a starter supply of books. Based on the concept of “Take a book, Return a book,” the free-standing Little Free Library structures provide a way to share books freely throughout the community to promote literacy, to foster fellowship, and to enhance the quality of life for all citizens.
