FIRST GRADERS BAKE AND SELL COOKIES FOR “COOKIES FOR CHRIST”
St. Joseph-St Elizabeth School first graders and their families have been busy baking dozens of cookies for their annual fund-raising service project, “Cookies for Christ.”
Each first grade family is asked to bake four dozen cookies. The cookies are for sale for 25 cents each from Dec. 2 to Dec. 5. St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth Schools students, faculty, staff and families purchase and enjoy the homemade cookies.
All monies raised are then donated to the Sunshine Club. The Sunshine Club, a joint venture of St. Joseph and St. Elizabeth Seton parishes, collects and purchases clothing, toys, household items and food which are given as Christmas gifts to families in need in the St. Joseph and St. Elizabeth Seton parish boundaries.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for our first graders to be witnesses for Christ in our community,” said St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth School Principal Lois Widner. “They are sharing their gift of stewardship at a young age. I am so proud of our first grade students and teachers!”
The Sunshine Club and its outreach to families in need at Christmastime was founded by retired first grade teacher Mrs. Joanne Krudop. The Sunshine Club sets up Christmas trees at both St. Joseph and St. Elizabeth Seton parishes with tags specifying clothing, toys or household items. Parish families purchase and return these items which are then sorted and given to families in need at Christmastime. Religious Education and School families also collect food items, and the families are given a box of food plus their choice of a turkey or a ham.
The first grade teachers guiding their students in the “Cookies for Christ” project are Mrs. Julie Peters and Miss Kaitlynn Gallaway. The first graders also took a field trip in November to Ellison Bakery to see how cookies are commercially made.
In previous years, the first graders have raised upwards of $800 with their “Cookies for Christ” which all goes to the Sunshine Club to purchase Christmas gifts for families in need at Christmastime. The monies raised this year will be presented to a representative of the Sunshine Club after the All School Mass on December 6.
