WALK FOR THE WETLANDS

Walk for the Wetlands is a unique 5K/2K walk to benefit Little River Wetlands Project, a local land trust celebrating its twentieth year of restoring and protecting wetlands in the Little River valley southwest of Fort Wayne.

The Walk will take place at LRWP’s Eagle Marsh preserve (6301 Engle Road) on Saturday, June 5, with start times from 9 to 11 a.m. Lutheran Health Network–Lutheran Hospital is the event sponsor. Participants will walk the nature trails of this beautiful marshland while viewing wildflowers, frogs, turtles, birds, and other wildlife. Naturalists along the route will point out interesting animals and plants and answer questions about the wetlands.

“June 5 should be a great time of year for everyone to get out and walk to help wetlands and all the wildlife that depend on them,” says Betsy Yankowiak, the group’s executive director.

All walkers who raise donations of at least $25 for LRWP can participate. Walkers will receive T-shirts, goodie bags, and prizes for higher levels of donations. Teams of walkers are also invited to join the fun and help raise money for Little River Wetlands Project’s preserves and free nature programs. Register for the Walk, support a Walker, or learn more at www.lrwp.org <www.lrwp.org/> /wfw or 260-478-2515.

Little River Wetlands Project maintains three restored wetland preserves and protects 1,100 acres of natural land between Fort Wayne and Huntington. Over 3,000 children and adults participate in its free nature programs annually. Other special events this year will include LRWP’s annual Open House at Eagle Marsh on Saturday, July 24, and Frogapalooza, a dinner and silent/live auction at which philanthropist Ian Rolland will be honored for his contributions to conservation in Indiana and to LRWP, on September 10.
