WILLIAM J. LEWIS, M.D., 62

WILLIAM J. LEWIS, M.D., 62, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2009 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.  Born in Tacoma, WA, raised in Palo Alto, CA. He started Parkview Neonatal I.C.U. along with Dr. Donald Hoffman, and acted as the Medical Director of the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Parkview Hospital 1979 to 2005; Medical Director, Emeritus, 2005. He received a BS from Marquette University and an MD from Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine, he was also a member of Alpha Omega Alpha in Medical School. He did his internship, residency and fellowship at Children’s Hospital, Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.  He was Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Ohio State and later Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Indiana University Purdue at Fort Wayne, he was also on the faculty at Lutheran College of Health Professions and Indiana Vocational Technical College. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics; Sub-Board Neonatal/Perinatal Medicine. He was involved in several publications in the Journal of Pediatrics and others. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He was a member of the, Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine; Section on Child abuse and Neglect; Section on Bioethics; American Medical Association; Indiana State Medical Association; National Perinatal Association; Indiana Neonatal Association; Prevention of Child abuse and Neglect, Indiana Chapter; American Professional Society on the abuse of Children. His special medical interests were: child abuse, apnea, SIDS, & Neonatal Respiratory Disease.

 

His special personal interests were Military History; World War II;  Naval Affairs; Photography and G-gauge Model Trains. He was also a member of numerous hospital committees including, Critical Care, Quality Assurance, Pediatrics (Chairman 1988-1991), Credentials and Ethics Committee. He maintained privileges at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, IN; St. Joseph Medical Center, Fort Wayne, IN; Whitley Memorial Hospital, Columbia City, IN and Dupont Hospital, Fort Wayne, IN.

Surviving are his brother, David A. (Linda) Lewis M.D. of Atherton, CA; sister, Christina Stankovich of San Jose; beloved friend, Annie Parks of Fort Wayne, IN; many loving nieces & nephews; great nieces & nephews; cousins and his many friends of Chicago.

Service is 7pm Friday,  at D.O. McComb and Sons,  Pine Valley Park Funeral Home, 1320 East Dupont Road with visitation 3 to 7pm., also a Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 10:30am at St. Charles Borremeo Catholic Church, 4916 Trier Rd. with calling 1 hour prior.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Fort Wayne Community Foundation Isaac Campbell Kidd Fund (name chosen after the Admiral of the USS Arizona by Dr. William Lewis.
