DONALD G. SCOTT, 91

DONALD G. SCOTT, 91, founder of Scott’s Food Stores passed away Saturday, December 27, 2008 at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Born in Galveston, Indiana, he was active in 4-H Club, showing Hereford Calves and Spotted Poland Pigs at the Cass County and the Indiana State Fair winning many awards. He loved working the fields with his father Lee and three brothers.

He attended Lincoln, Galveston and Ball State University. While at Ball State, he married Marjorie Hutchens in 1939; she preceded him in death in 1978. He worked at Marsh Supermarket while at Ball State and was the first non-family stockholder.

He served in The United States Army Air Corp. While in the service, he attended Montana State University as an aviation air cadet.

In 1954, he founded Scott’s Food Stores, taking the company to northeast Indiana’s largest food retailer before retiring in 1996. He had 18 stores and 4,300 associates. From the 1st 10,000 square foot store at Fairfield and Taylor, his niche was turning stores that failed into successes.

He was a well respected and regarded business leader who led with kindness and respect started many others in their careers.

He received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities from the University of St. Francis, Fort Wayne. He was inducted into Greater Fort Wayne Business Hall of Fame in 1996. He was appointed Sagamore of the Wabash by Governor Orr, as well as receiving numerous other citations and awards on the local, state and national level.

He was involved in numerous charitable and private boards. He served as Chairman on the Indiana State Egg Board for 15 years. He was a member of Trinity English Lutheran Church. He was an avid golfer who played until age 90 and played tennis until his late 80’s.

He married Rose Botts in 1980. They have homes in Fort Wayne and Jacksonville, FL. Also surviving are two daughters, Cheryl Scott (Tina Taviano) of Fort Wayne and Lee Scott of Venice, CA; one grandson, Chris (Emily) Irmscher of St. Charles, IL; two granddaughters, “T” Irmscher of Fort Wayne, and Ariel Hassman of Venice CA; three great-grandchildren; three step-daughters, Joan (Gary) McVoy of Fort Wayne, Linda (Tony) DeBenedetto of Jacksonville, FL, and Dianne Peterson of Fort Wayne; six step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren.

Service was at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity English Lutheran Church, 405 W. Wayne Street with calling one hour prior, Rev. Frederick E. Hasecke officiating. Calling was also from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Rd. Private entombment in Lindenwood Cemetery.
