ALLSTATE SAFETY NEWS TIPS FOR KEEPING KIDS SAFE IN THE SWIMMING POOL

Swimming pools can be a fun family gathering place, unfortunately they can also be the site of tragedy. A study conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission found that 69 percent of home drowning deaths of children under five occurred under parental supervision. In most of these cases, drowning occurred in the family pool, with the children having been seen just five minutes earlier.

FACT: Drowning is the second-leading cause of accidental death among children ages 1 to 14.

FACT: A child can drown in as little as one inch of water, and drowning is usually quick and silent.

FACT: A swimming pool is 14 times more likely than a motor vehicle to be involved in the death of a child age 4 and under.

“A pool is a wonderful play area, as long as it is kept safe,” said Allstate Agent KEVIN GWOZDZ “Parents should consider setting up as many barriers as possible to make it difficult for children to get into the pool area when not in use.” In addition to the fences often required by local ordinances, pool owners should create layers of protection around the pool, including door alarms, locks and safety covers to help prevent accidents.

The following tips from Allstate Insurance Company and the American Red Cross will help keep children safe in and around your home’s swimming pool:

* Maintain constant supervision. Watch children around any water environment, no matter what skills your child has acquired and no matter how shallow the water.

* Don’t rely on substitutes. The use of flotation devices and inflatable toys cannot replace parental supervision. Such devices can suddenly shift position, lose air or slip out from underneath the child, leaving him or her in a dangerous situation.

Enroll children in a learn-to-swim or water safety course – these courses encourage safe practices. The decision to provide your children with an early aquatic experience will benefit them for life.
