GRAMESSANCHEZ HONORED

Lance Cpl. David GramesSanchez’s contribution to our freedom and safety is measureless. The Waynedale community reached out to the family and friends of this fallen American hero on Saturday, May 20 at the Klaehn, Fahl & Melton funeral home.

GramesSanchez, a tank operator for the Marines, died May 11, along with three other Marines when the tank they were traveling in rolled off a bridge and landed upside down in a canal.

While the life of this local marine was being remembered inside the funeral home, members of the Patriot Guard Riders were gathered outdoors. Under a crystal blue sky, the riders formed an honor guard for GramesSanchez. Their message was simple and yet powerful. They were there to show support for service members, their families and the Waynedale community.

The day of Lance Cpl. GramesSanchez’s funeral, May 20, was also Armed Forces Day.

A day set aside “to expand public understanding of what type of job is performed and the role of the military in civilian life”. It is a day to honor and acknowledge the people of the Armed Forces of the United States.

The late President John F. Kennedy expressed the importance of Armed Forces Day by the following statement. “…Our Servicemen and women are serving throughout the world as guardians of peace-many of them away from their homes, their friends and their families. They are visible evidence of our determination to meet any threat to the peace with measured strength and high resolve. They are also evidence of a harsh but inescapable truth—that the survival of freedom requires great cost and commitment, and great personal sacrifice.”

The community of Waynedale is forever indebted to Lance Cpl. David GramesSanchez. The young marine answered the call as a guardian of the freedoms we all too often take for granted. We salute you, we thank you, and we will never forget you.
