MIAMI ‘LADY’ INDIANS WIN FIFTH CITY TITLE
The Miami ‘Lady’ Indians won their fifth city basketball title defeating Blackhawk Middle School 20-19. It was a defensive battle on both teams part. Neither team was willing to give up fast break baskets or easy shots. Coach Davis called it a “basketball chess game.”
With two minutes remaining in the game, Blackhawk was leading 17-14. Everything was looking up for Blackhawk until Alexis Meeks drilled a three-pointer from the right side of the court to tie the game. Brielle Wattley scored on a lay-up to give Blackhawk a 19-17 lead. With 12 seconds left, Miami’s Preoshia Kelly made one of two free throws. The Lady Indians forced a jump ball as Blackhawk frantically tried to get the ball down the court and run out the clock. The possession arrow favored Miami. With four seconds left in the game and in the season of the Lady Indians, Janoree Weemes found teammate Elise Hunter alone in the lane and Hunter’s short jumper went through the net as time expired. Joy and sadness filled the Elmhurst gym. When it was all said and done, the Lady Indians had won a hard fought victory and their fifth city championship. The Lady Indians finished the season with a 12-1 record (undefeated in reserve play).
