SCHOLARSHIPS PRESENTED FROM USPS
A group of high school graduates will commence their college education with a graduation present from USPS employees. The Postal Employees Scholarship Committee was proud to present 16 graduating seniors with $500 scholarships at a special ceremony.
The mission of the committee is to award scholarships to the child, stepchild, or adopted child of career postal employees in the 467-468 zip code. Beginning 2001, Transitional Employees with 3 years service also were eligible.
In the scholarship world today, many awards go to those students who are the ‘star athlete’ or the ‘academic star’. Academic ability alone does not necessarily ensure success at the collegiate level and in life. Leadership, work ethic, self-determination and a strong set of personal values in many ways take precedence. Therefore, in evaluating the applications and awarding the scholarships all these factors are considered.
Fund raising activities such as bowling and golf tournaments, raffles, bus trip to Blue Chip Casino, and the annual winter dance are the sole source of contributions to the scholarship program. From 1994 through today with the volunteer support of Postal Employees in 467–468 and fund raising activities, they have now given $48,000 in scholarships.

Marcus Ihrie (pronounced Eer-ie)

Marcus attended New Haven High School with an almost perfect attendance record. He was extremely involved serving four years on the Golf Team and Tennis Team, and as President of both, as well as the Basketball Statistician for three years. He was in the National Honor Society, tutored special needs students, and was a peer tutor. He worked as a Player Assistant at Brookwood Golf Club and volunteered with the American Lung Association hole-in-one contest.
Marcus is talented academically and athletically. He carried a demanding academic load, and is above all a leader. He is dedicated, hard working and an example for all the other players. He is simply one fine young man who represents all that is best about young people today.
His experience as a peer tutor and special needs student tutoring helped him develop an interest in teaching. He plans to study elementary education at Franklin College. Marcus feels that a dedicated male role model at school can be a positive resource.
