HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL REVIEW: COACH NEWLIN IS BACK
On Friday morning, August 8th, Coach Mark Newlin was in the middle of the Wayne High School practice field barking out orders to his football team. The team was dressed in shoulder pads helmets and shorts. Newlin was wearing shorts, a straw hat, and had a stop watch and whistle around his neck as he directed his new team through their drills.
Newlin coached the Wayne Generals from 1992 through 1996. In 1992 he was runner-up at the state finals and in 1995 they won the Class 4A state championship. Like the other area high schools Wayne is in the middle of the two-a-day practices and has a lot to teach prior to their first scrimmage on Friday, August 15th against Belmont at Belmont 6pm.
Wayne’s record last year was 2 – 9 and Coach Newlin hopes to improve on that this year. “It all depends on how these kids respond to adversity. Every team will come up against difficult obstacles and opponents during the season and how they respond to those challenges will determine what type of season we have.”
As the day got hotter, the practice changed from contact to instructional. The helmets and shoulder pads were discarded and Coach Newlin went back to barking more instructions to his very attentive audience.
