POWELL WINS AGAIN

Twelve-year-old Kalene Powell will again represent Northern Indiana in the All-American Soap Box Derby Race in Akron, Ohio. She won the Super Stock Race held on Saturday, June 28th in Valparaiso, IN. She was one of 41 boys and girls who competed in the race in Valparaiso. She will join over 400 other local Champs and 100 Rally Champs from all over the world to compete in the 66th All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio on Saturday, July 26th.

Kalene represented Northern Indiana last year in the Stock Division by virtue of her local Champion win in Goshen, IN. She placed fourth out of 148 cars in the Stock Division of the 65th All-American Soap Box Derby last year.

Kalene lives in Mill Road Estates, Fort Wayne with her sister Kristina, and parents Tim and Phyllis Powell. She is a seventh grade student at Heritage Jr. High School. Her grandparents, Charles and Marvel Powell of the Waynedale area sponsor her car.

Kalene comes from a family with three generations of Soap Box Derby experience. Her cousin Dani Schneider was the Goshen local winner of all three divisions; Stock, Super-Stock, and Masters. Another cousin Shannon Newman was the last local champ to represent Fort Wayne. The last race in Fort Wayne was held in Franke Park in 1987.

The 66th running of “The Greatest Amateur Downhill Racing Event in the World” will begin with the opening ceremonies and parade at 9:30am on Saturday, July 26th. Over 20,000 spectators are expected to observe this event, now nationally sponsored by Home Depot.
