COVERDALE TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPION
Wayne Coverdale, 11431 Hamilton Road was awarded 1st place in the Semi-Tank Class at the 2003 Indiana Truck Driving Championships held on June 14, 2003, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds by the Indiana Motor Truck Association. Mr. Coverdale competed against 106 participants for top state honors and will represent the state of Indiana on August 19-23, at the National Truck Driving Competition in Columbus, Ohio. There is only one driver per state selected to compete. This will be Wayne’s 2nd trip to the Nationals.
Mr. Coverdale has been employed with Con-Way Central Express, 2626 W. Coliseum Blvd., Fort Wayne for 14 years.
To participate competitors were required to have remained accident free for a full year prior to the event. The competition consisted of a rigorous course with 6 tests. Relating to everyday obstacles, the tests require a driver to perform intricate and precise driving maneuvers. In addition, contestants were tested on their knowledge of the trucking industry and safety rules and regulations and on their ability to inspect vehicles and determine if they are in a safe operating condition (pre-trip inspection).
In addition, the Con-Way Central Express team took 1st place with Wayne Coverdale-Fort Wayne placing 1st in Tank, Mark Serf-Muncie placing 1st in Flatbed Division, Wayne Conley-Richmond placing 3rd in 3-Axle, Steve Gordon-Indianapolis placing 2nd Sleeper Berth, and Brent Quire-Bedford placing 2nd in Twins Division.
The Indiana Motor Truck Association is a member trade association serving Indiana truck operators both for hire and private. It is based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The truck driving championships are held annually to acknowledge and praise the refined skills of Indiana’s top drivers.
