MAE JULIAN

Seabiscuit

When my son was young, he just about drove me nuts. He was not the darling little sweetie, laying in your arms, cooing and such. Nope! ‑Danny was a hellion. Hyperactive, and lived at fast -forward speed. ‑If you have had a hyperactive child you know the stress and self-doubt it puts you through as a mother. I used to think that self- control and limitations would never be part of his life. I worried so much that I thought I’d go crazy. I quit going to teacher’s conferences when he was in high school, because it was like listening to a broken record. I wondered what he would ever do for a living. I could never picture him in a suit and tie, and being inside for any length of time. ‑I wish I had known then that God has a place for everybody, and that all will work out in the end.

There is a movie coming out on July the 25th. It is called Seabiscuit. It is about a horse that no one thought had a chance. During the depression, Seabiscuit came into his own. A book was written about this horse in 2001. ‑It is written by Laura Hillenbrand. “Seabiscuit was a comeback kid for a comeback time. ‑It is meticulously researched…As noble and honest as heroes come, Seabiscuit was an extraordinary athlete who embodied the heart and spirit of a nation”…..New York Times book review.

Funny how things turn out. My son, Danny, is working at Keeneland Race Track in Lexington, Kentucky. The film, Seabiscuit, was filmed at Keeneland. Danny is on the camera, filming the making of Seabiscuit. He has trained horses, owned a horse for awhile, forked hay with the guys in the stalls, and mixed with the jockeys, the trainers, and the millionaires. He saw them all as unique individuals. ‑What I really love about Dan is he never sees the wealthy as superior to the poor. He never left the track without throwing whatever change he had in the Salvation Army ladies’ basket at the track. I had no idea the high esteem in which he was held until he took me to a UK basketball game in Lexington. His name was continually called out and he was slapped on the back in good cheer as we walked through the crowd.

My son. What a gift he is. He came all the way from a hyperactive forever-in-motion kid to “filming the filming”of the movie, Seabiscuit, at Keeneland Racetrack. Have you seen those films that tell you how a film was made, put together, techniques used, etc.? ‑That’s what Dan did. The cameramen who were filming the film were hooked into Dan’s camera and he worked in tandem with them. It was amazing to listen to him talk about the filming and how it is done. Geez, has Hollywood come to Kentucky? ‑Apparantly so. And in the middle of all of this is my son. I can’t tell you how proud I am of him. I’d like to have all of his teachers through the years go see this film and know that Dan made a success of himself after all, in spite of their concerns.

I hope all my Waynedale News friends will take the time to see Seabiscuit. If you have a computer, type in Seabiscuit in your search engine and it will give you the very interesting life of this horse, and the era in which it was filmed. Laura Hillenbrand, a very gifted author, spent three years writing the book. ‑It is a window into an era in American History. ‑It is a wildly exciting, truth-is -stranger-than fiction story.

There is something about the story of Seabiscuit, and my son, that seem to merge. Both are champions and both are come-from behind winners. I am fortunate indeed to have him, as he is a blessing beyond words.

Love to all my Waynedale Friends,
Mae
